where we look
i12c talks pulls NYC listings fresh three times a day. This is every source it reads, and what it does with them.
sources we pull from
- Brooklyn Public Library - every branch
- Lectures on Tap - talks in bars, run as a series
- McNally Jackson - readings and launches across its stores
- Queens Public Library - every branch
- The New York Public Library - Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island
- Thought Gallery - a curated NYC ideas calendar; every listing links back to them
how it works
- We show what's on today and tomorrow. Anything further out isn't here yet.
- Scrapers read each source's own calendar three times a day: morning, early afternoon and evening.
- Each talk is tagged with one to three of 14 categories by an AI tagger. It's right most of the time and wrong some of the time.
what we don't have
- Anything a source doesn't publish. If a library doesn't put a talk on its own calendar, we cannot see it.
- Sources that block automated readers. Where that happens we wait, rather than working around it.
- Registration status, mostly. Where a source says "sold out" or "waitlist" we pass it through; where it says nothing we say nothing.
